This PDF report is a summary of two years of productivity trials with Fragaria vesca (also known as the alpine strawberry, woodland strawberry or fraises des bois) conducted by Michael Wellik, owner of The Strawberry Store.
This report is being released in its current state now to allow those interested in commercial production of fraises des bois to grow the crop yet this year.
The first trial was conducted in 2007 to attempt to find the potential productivity of alpine strawberries and to look at 8 alpine strawberry varieties to determine if varietal differences are possible. The study was done with one two year old plant of each variety. Plants were provide with as close to ideal growing conditions as possible, though not in protected culture. Fruit was harvested for the spring only. Fruit per plant and fruit weight were collected.
The second study was done in the spring of 2008 with one year old plants grown in containers. Four plants per variety of 8 varieties were trialed in the spring. The same sampling and data collection methods were used as the first study.
